Film Canister Rockets

film canister rockets

Supplies:

Plastic film cannister with snap on lid (those with lids that snap inside canister work best)
Construction paper or printer paper
Vinegar
Baking soda
Eye protection
Towels (for clean up)

Directions:
This project can be messy and is best done outside.

10 Take the lid off of the film canister

9 Cut a rectangle out of construction paper (approx. 4" x 6")*

8 Secure rectangle onto film canister to make the rocket body, with the open end of canister at one end of the tube (leave room for lid to be snapped back on)

7 Cut a PacMan® shape out of construction paper (trace a jar lid to help make the circle)

6 Tape two sides of circle together to form a cone

5 Tape cone to the top of the tube&endash;opposite the open film canister

4 Put a small amount of baking soda in film canister

3 Put on eye protection

TIP: Have vinegar and canister lid handy, you will need to work quickly

2 Pour a small amount of vinegar into the canister and snap the lid on tight

1 Place the rocket canister cap down, on the launch pad (sidewalk or driveway), stand back and prepare for lift off

*Get more creative: draw a design on the construction paper before attaching it. Imagine yourself in the rocket. Draw a circle at the top of the rocket body, attach a photo of your face looking out through the portal.

Try to make the rocket fly higher and faster by experimenting with different paper styles (the less the rocket weighs the farther it will fly), cone shapes, fins, amounts of baking soda and vinegar.
